The official New York pages that matter, in one place — the same sources our practice tests are built from.
Start with the DMV
- New York State DMV — The official DMV home page: licenses, registrations, online transactions and office information.
- Get a Learner Permit — The DMV’s step-by-step path to a first license: who can apply, what to bring, the written test and what comes after it.
- New York State Driver’s Manual & Practice Tests — Read the manual online chapter by chapter and take the DMV’s own chapter quizzes and road-sign practice tests.
- New York State Driver’s Manual (PDF) — The full official manual (MV-21) as one downloadable PDF — the same book the written test is drawn from.
- DMV Office Locations — Find your local DMV office and make a reservation — the DMV recommends booking ahead for most in-person services.
After you’re licensed
- Renew a Driver License — Renew online, by mail or in person — you can renew up to a year before your license expires, and a vision test is part of it.
- Renew a Registration — Renew your vehicle registration online, by mail or at an office; your vehicle must have been inspected within the past 12 months.
- New York State Inspections — Every New York-registered vehicle needs a safety inspection once a year at a DMV-licensed station (emissions too, for most vehicles) — includes the station lookup.
- The New York State Driver Point System — How points add up: 11 points in 24 months can mean a suspended license, and 6 or more points in 18 months triggers the Driver Responsibility Assessment.
- Driver Responsibility Assessment — The extra fee drivers pay at 6 or more points in 18 months (or after certain alcohol and drug convictions) — what it costs and how to pay it.
- Move Over Law — The New York State Police explain the law: slow down and move over for emergency and hazard vehicles stopped at the roadside.
- 511NY — Real-time traffic — NYSDOT’s live traffic map, cameras, incidents and travel alerts across New York State. Dial 511 from any phone in New York.
- Register to Become an Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor — How to join the Donate Life Registry through a DMV transaction, including when you renew your license.
- New York State Donate Life Registry — Enroll online in the state’s organ, eye and tissue donor registry — anyone 16 or older can sign up.
- What Auto Coverages Do I Need? — The Department of Financial Services on New York’s required minimum coverage, including $50,000 of no-fault (PIP) protection.
